Physics Book Club

At the book club (a cooperation between the regional group of the jDPG Bonn and the Fachschaft), we read, discuss and debate literary works related to physics together. We meet monthly in a cosy atmosphere at HISKP to discuss the book we have read in advance. At our first meeting, for example, we discussed ‘The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy’ by Douglas Adams.

Whether you read a lot or want to motivate yourself to read, everyone is welcome!

There is a private Signal group1 for exchange and planning. There we will vote for the next book and you will also find all the information about the books we have read and what we are currently reading.

Ratings of books read

At the end of each meeting, everyone gives a rating of 1-5 stars, which are listed here on average. We also write a short review together.

Rating: (3.9 ± 0.5) ☆
Review:
‘Don't expect a plot, but it was fun. No basic knowledge of physics necessary; knowledge of physical improbability theory beneficial. You should have read it to have a say (the insiders), even if you throw in the towel afterwards.’
Rating: (3.8 ± 0.3) ☆
Review: ‘The book contains fewer horror elements than expected, but all the more landscape descriptions. The image of the monster differs both externally and in character from the ideas that were formed in advance by knowledge from modern times. What we take away is that science and individuals should take responsibility for their actions (and not dig around in the graveyard).’
Rating: (3.9 ± 0.4) ☆
Review: Disclaimer: Do not read the cover text!
‘The content is timeless for a reason. No one has yet been arrested for flicking a light switch. (Nor for killing a nurse.) - Justice is on holiday.’

Rating: (3.5 ± 0.9) ☆
Review: ‘It's really a lot about Chinese post-war history and a bit light on aliens for the blurb. The book raised questions for us such as: ‘When can we declare something as extraterrestrial life / controlled by it?’, ‘Are our physical models too complex?’ and ‘Are there (hard) limits in science? By the way, radio astronomy is more important than you think and only dehydrates when necessary.’
